Listen to this lecture
Bruce VanSledright link does research on the teaching and learning of history in schools. Much of his research has been case-based, detailed studies of how teachers go about teaching the subject. His reports on how students learn history in those teachers’ classes have focused on the ways in which the students read history texts. In addition, he taught a diverse fifth-grade class to conduct historical investigations using the tools employed by historians and textbooks. A book about this project is was published in 2002 In Search of America's Past: Learning to Read History in Elementary School. Other publications include: Can Ten-Year-Olds Learn to Investigate History As Historians Do?(Aug., 2000), Arbitrating Competing Claims in the Classroom Culture Wars.(Feb. 1999) and Elementary Social Studies: Constructing a Powerful Approach to Teaching and Learning by S. G. Grant and Bruce Vansledright (2005).
