I. LESSON PLAN:

STUDENT QUESTION:

Given the constraints of the Constitution, how did people resist slavery?

Comments: We wanted students to be able to understand the historical constraints of abolitionism during the antebellum period. More broadly, we wanted to students to develop historical empathy by placing themselves into a specific historical context. We wanted students to examine different strategies of resistance, different abolitionists, and explore the reasons that different abolitionists used different strategies. For instance, why did Frederick Douglass choose rhetoric and moral suasion while John Brown chose organized violence? What set of historical contexts led them to choose these strategies, and what constrained or facilitated their actions?
